Kit configurator — FAQ

How does the configurator recommend a kit?
It matches your motor brand, installation preference, and budget against a database of verified kit compatibility data. The EP801 path is special — only two kits are safe for that motor.
Why can't I use SpeedBox or BadassBox on Shimano EP801?
The EP801 firmware triggers an E295 error when it detects an incompatible device, which then escalates to E299 — a permanent, irreversible motor lock. Only Eplus Flash (software) or PearTune 3.0 (hardware) are safe on EP801.
Is ebike tuning legal in the UK?
No — not on public roads. Under the Highway Act 1988 and EAPC Regulations, an electric bike must not provide assistance beyond 15.5 mph on public roads. Fitting a tuning kit reclassifies the bike as a moped, requiring registration, insurance and a helmet. All use must be restricted to private land.
Can I trust geni.us affiliate links?
Yes — geni.us links are geo-routing links that automatically redirect to the correct Amazon store for your country (Amazon.co.uk for UK visitors). The product is the same regardless of destination.
What if my motor isn't listed?
Select 'Other / Not sure'. The BadassBox 5 external magnetic kit is compatible with most wheel-sensor ebikes regardless of brand. If you have a Bafang, Giant, or Brose motor, head to the relevant motor page for specific guidance.
