⚠ SpeedBox 1.3 NOT compatible with Shimano EP801 — permanent E299 lock risk

The SpeedBox 1.3 is compatible with Shimano EP8 (DU-EP800) only. Fitting it to the newer EP801 (DU-EP801, late 2022+) triggers error E295, which after 4 occurrences escalates to E299: permanent motor lock, reversible only at an authorised Shimano dealer. For EP801, use PearTune MSO 3.0 or Eplus Flash only.

SpeedBox 1.x series — Bosch and Shimano motors

The SpeedBox 1.x series is designed specifically for Bosch and Shimano motors. The key distinction is the Bosch generation: Smart System (BES3), Gen5 (BDU384Y), Gen4 and older generations each require a specific SpeedBox version. Always check the motor reference stamped on the motor case before ordering.

For Bosch Smart System (BES3) motors, the SpeedBox 1.1 B.Tuning, 1.3 and 1.4 are the options. The B.Tuning suffix indicates Bluetooth connectivity, allowing speed limit adjustment and on/off switching via a dedicated smartphone app without touching the bike.

SpeedBox 3.x series — Yamaha, Giant, TQ, Brose motors

The 3.x series covers the remaining major motor brands: Yamaha (PW, PW-X, PW-X2, PW-X3, PW-C2), Giant SyncDrive (Pro, Pro2, Pro3), TQ HPR series (HPR40 — HPR50/HPR60: no internal kit available as of June 2026), Brose Drive, OLI Move/Sport, Specialized SL 1.1/1.2 and CrossCore RC. Select the exact version matching your motor — cross-compatibility between 3.x versions is limited.

Bosch Smart System: detection risk and how to minimise it

The Bosch Smart System (BES3) integrates more sophisticated anti-tampering logic than earlier generations. Three essential rules to minimise detection risk:

  • Never exceed 32-35 km/h in assisted mode — the system logs anomalous speed events above this threshold.
  • Never accept automatic Bosch firmware updates — disable auto-update in the eBike Flow app and check your kit manufacturer's site before applying any update.
  • Run the reset procedure after each ride — for Gen4, leave the bike on after stopping until the display shows 0.0 mph (the system recalculates its speed reference).

After 3 detections, the system enters a permanent degraded mode (error 0x524001). The SpeedBox B.Tuning versions include an additional anti-detection mode that further reduces the risk.

SpeedBox vs BadassBox — which to choose?

The choice comes down to your priorities:

  • SpeedBox if you want: real speed on your display, advanced Bluetooth control, lifetime warranty, or if you are confident doing a 30-60 minute installation.
  • BadassBox if you want: no-tool installation in 15 minutes, zero traces in motor logs (external kit), easy removal before service visits.

SpeedBox FAQ

How do I activate and deactivate the SpeedBox on my ebike?
Activation uses the Walk Assist button on your bike's display: hold it for 2 seconds to switch to tuning mode, and 2 more seconds to return to normal. On B.Tuning versions (Bluetooth), you can also use the smartphone app. The kit is completely invisible from outside the motor.
SpeedBox 1.x vs SpeedBox 3.x — which series should I choose?
The SpeedBox 1.x series is for Bosch motors (Smart System, Gen5, Gen4, SX) and Shimano EP8. The SpeedBox 3.x series covers Yamaha, Giant, TQ, Brose, OLI, Specialized and CrossCore. Always verify the exact motor model (printed on the motor case) before ordering — versions are not interchangeable.
Is the SpeedBox lifetime warranty real?
Yes, SpeedBox offers a lifetime warranty on products bought through their official website or Amazon. In the rare event of a failure, they replace the kit free of charge. The warranty does not cover damage from incorrect installation or electrical surges.
How long does SpeedBox installation take?
Between 30 and 90 minutes depending on the motor model and your experience. SpeedBox requires opening the motor case (Torx T25/T30 bolts), identifying the cables, and splicing into the pedal assist sensor cable. Motor-specific video tutorials are available on speedbox-tuning.com.
Can I accept eBike Flow updates with a SpeedBox installed?
No. The Bosch 11.13.0 firmware (April 2024) bricked SpeedBox units ordered before May 2024 on Bosch Smart System motors. Never accept OTA updates through eBike Flow without first verifying compatibility with your SpeedBox version on the official speedbox-tuning.com website.
Is my Bosch ABS ebike compatible with a SpeedBox?
No. Bikes equipped with Bosch ABS braking are not compatible with any currently available SpeedBox kit. There is no tuning chip available for Bosch ABS bikes at this time.
Is the SpeedBox detectable at a Bosch service centre?
Internal kits can potentially leave traces in the motor firmware logs. To minimise risk: never exceed 32-35 km/h in assisted mode, do not accept Bosch firmware updates, and follow the reset procedure after each ride (leave the bike on until 0.0 mph is shown). Remove before any warranty claim.
