Yamaha PW motor series — which one do you have?

Yamaha's PW (PowerAssist) range is one of the most established motor families in eBiking. Compatibility varies significantly between generations, especially after the PW-X3 introduced anti-tamper logic in 2022. Check your motor model on the motor casing or your bike's spec sheet before ordering a kit.

PW-X3: the anti-tamper challenge

Introduced in 2022, the PW-X3 delivers 95 Nm and features Zero-Cadence technology — the motor can provide assistance even with minimal pedal cadence, which is useful in steep technical terrain. This same technology makes tuning harder: the motor constantly cross-checks cadence, speed, and torque for internal consistency.

Kits confirmed compatible with the PW-X3:

  • VOLspeed V3 — wired internal kit, console-button speed control, dynamic transition mode for a natural feel beyond the cut-off point
  • SpeedBox 3.3 B.Tuning — Bluetooth with iOS/Android app, remote lock, real-speed display on console
  • RedPed — compact wired kit with app integration, explicit PW-X3 support
  • BadassBox 4 — external magnetic kit, no motor opening, no electronic traces in the motor controller

For the PW-S2, PW-TE, and PW-CE, all kits in the comparison table above are compatible. The older SpeedBox 2.0 works well with these motors and is the more affordable internal option.

PW-LINK 2026: new platform, compatibility TBC

Yamaha launched the PW-LINK communication platform in 2026, initially with the updated PW-XM. PW-LINK standardises the data bus between motor, battery, display, and accessories. Kit manufacturers are actively testing compatibility. As of mid-2026, no kit has published confirmed PW-LINK support.

If you have a 2026 PW-XM or a bike specced with the PW-LINK system, check the VOLspeed, SpeedBox, and RedPed product pages directly for the latest confirmed compatibility before purchasing any kit.

VOLspeed V3 for Yamaha — detailed notes

The VOLspeed V3 is the standout kit for Yamaha PW-X3 and PW-S2 owners who want a clean, console-based experience. Its key differentiator: speed adjustment happens directly via the existing buttons on your Yamaha display — no additional remote or smartphone required. A dynamic mode softens the transition when assistance resumes after briefly dropping below the set threshold, making the behaviour feel closer to a stock motor.

Installation is internal (motor case removal required), and VOLspeed provides model-specific wiring diagrams for each PW variant. Typical installation time is 30–45 minutes with basic tools.

SpeedBox for Yamaha — which version?

SpeedBox offers two relevant versions for current Yamaha motors:

  • SpeedBox 2.0 (~£155-179) — compatible with PW, PW-X, PW-S2, PW-SE, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE. Activates via the Lights button (hold 2 sec). Shows real speed on console. The reliable and affordable choice for pre-2022 motors.
  • SpeedBox 3.3 B.Tuning (~£229-265) — compatible with all of the above plus PW-X3. Adds Bluetooth, the SpeedBox B.Tuning app (iOS/Android), remote speed cap adjustment, and remote lock. The recommended choice for PW-X3 and anyone wanting app control.

BadassBox 4 for Yamaha — the no-trace option

The BadassBox clips externally to the rear wheel speed sensor. It adds a magnetic pulse that halves the frequency the motor controller reads, causing the assistance to continue beyond the stock cut-off. Because it operates outside the motor's electronics entirely, it leaves no trace in any diagnostic log. This is the best option if warranty preservation is a priority.

The trade-off is display: your Yamaha console will show half your real speed. The free Boost Buddy app (Bluetooth dongle sold separately, or use a GPS cycling computer) can display your real speed on your phone. Installation takes around 15 minutes with no tools.

Battery range with a tuning kit

A tuning kit does not change battery capacity. However, using motor assistance beyond the stock cut-off point increases power draw significantly. At moderate assisted speeds above the limit, expect a 25–40% range reduction. At higher assisted speeds, the reduction can exceed 50%.

Yamaha offers battery capacities from 400 Wh to 800 Wh (on the PW-XM). If you plan to use a tuning kit regularly on longer rides, prioritise bikes specced with 630 Wh or 800 Wh batteries.

Brands using Yamaha motors

The following brands use Yamaha PW motors and are compatible with the kits on this page:

  • Trek — selected models (Rail, Powerfly) use Yamaha PW-X3 and PW-S2
  • Giant — SyncDrive Pro 2 is based on the Yamaha PW-X3 platform. Kits listed as PW-X3 compatible work on Giant SyncDrive Pro 2 bikes. See our Giant motor page for full details.
  • Haibike — long-time Yamaha partner across ALLTRAIL, LYKE, and HYBE ranges
  • Also: Lapierre, BH Bikes, Gitane, Winora, Raymon, Batavus, Raleigh (selected models)

Yamaha tuning FAQ

Can the Yamaha PW-X3 be tuned?
Yes, but with care. The PW-X3 includes advanced anti-tamper software similar to Bosch's Smart System. Only kits explicitly listed as PW-X3 compatible work reliably: SpeedBox 3.3 B.Tuning, VOLspeed V3, RedPed, and the BadassBox 4 (external). Keep assisted speed conservative to minimise detection risk.
What is the difference between SpeedBox 2.0 and SpeedBox 3.3 B.Tuning for Yamaha?
SpeedBox 2.0 is a wired internal kit compatible with older PW-series motors (PW, PW-X, PW-S2, PW-SE, PW-ST, PW-TE, PW-CE). It activates via the Lights button (hold 2 sec) and shows real speed on the console. SpeedBox 3.3 B.Tuning adds Bluetooth, an iOS/Android app, remote lock, and explicit PW-X3 compatibility — it is the recommended choice for 2022-onwards motors.
What is PW-LINK and does it affect tuning kit compatibility?
PW-LINK is Yamaha's new 2026 motor communication platform that standardises connectivity across the PW range. It was introduced alongside the PW-XM update. Compatibility with existing tuning kits is still being assessed by manufacturers. Check SpeedBox, VOLspeed and RedPed product pages for the latest PW-LINK confirmation before purchasing.
Does the BadassBox show real speed on my Yamaha display?
No. The BadassBox intercepts the wheel speed signal and halves its frequency: your Yamaha console will show half your actual speed. For real-speed readout on the console, choose an internal kit such as SpeedBox or VOLspeed V3. The free Boost Buddy app can display your real speed via smartphone when using the BadassBox.
Does a tuning chip void my Yamaha warranty?
Yes, in all cases. Yamaha service centres can identify kit use during maintenance. The BadassBox leaves no electronic trace in the motor logs — its main advantage if you need warranty service. Internal kits may leave diagnostic traces. Remove any kit before presenting the bike for warranty work.
Which brands use Yamaha motors I can tune?
Trek (TQ partnership aside), Haibike, Giant (SyncDrive Pro 2 is PW-X3 based), Lapierre, BH Bikes, Gitane, Winora, and Raymon all use Yamaha PW motors. The Giant SyncDrive Pro is a rebadged PW-X — kits listed as PW-X compatible work on it. See our Giant motor page for details.
