Bosch motor generations — which one do you have?
Bosch is the world leader in ebike motors. Kit compatibility depends entirely on your motor generation. Check the motor case for the generation marking before ordering.
| Generation | Years | Torque | Compatible kits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen2 / Gen3 | 2013-2017 | 60-75 Nm | SpeedBox, BadassBox, VOLspeed, Wiesel, PearTune |
| Gen4 / Performance CX | 2018-2020 | 85 Nm | SpeedBox, BadassBox, VOLspeed V4, Wiesel, PearTune |
| Smart System BES3 (Gen4+) | 2021+ | 85 Nm | SpeedBox 1.1/1.3/1.4 B.Tuning, VOLspeed V2, Wiesel, RedPed |
| Gen5 BDU384Y / BDU38 | 2024+ | 85 Nm | SpeedBox 1.6 B.Tuning, Wiesel Gen5, BadassBox 5 |
Bosch Smart System: the anti-tamper challenge
From the BES3 generation onwards, Bosch introduced significantly more sophisticated anti-tampering logic. The Smart System logs speed anomalies and can generate error code 0x524001 after repeated detection events. After 3 detections, the system enters a permanent degraded mode.
The kits that handle Smart System best are those with dedicated anti-detection modes: SpeedBox B.Tuning (adjustable speed limit via app), Wiesel Smart System (proprietary speed modification algorithm) and VOLspeed V2 (dynamic mode). The BadassBox remains the safest option in terms of leaving no electronic traces, since it operates externally without any electronic contact.
External vs internal: the key trade-off
External kits (BadassBox) use a magnet clipped to the rear wheel speed sensor to fool the motor controller. No motor opening, no tools, no electronic traces. The downside: the console shows half your real speed, and the kit is physically visible on the sensor.
Internal kits (SpeedBox, Wiesel, VOLspeed, PearTune, RedPed) splice into the motor harness. They show real or near-real speed on the console, are invisible once installed, and offer additional features like Bluetooth control and anti-detection modes. They require opening the motor case and typically 30–90 minutes of installation time.
