VOLspeed Ebike Tuning Kit — Dynamic Mode for Bosch Smart System & Yamaha
Made in Germany, VOLspeed stands apart through its dynamic mode: assistance is reduced progressively as speed rises — not cut abruptly. Three versions cover the main modern motors: V2 (Bosch Smart System), V3 (Yamaha PW-X3 / PW-S2) and V4 (Bosch Gen4 / CX). Metal casing standard since September 2024.

VOLspeed Tuning — Brand overview
VOLspeed Tuning is a German manufacturer specialising in internal tuning modules for electric bikes. The brand has built its reputation around a single distinctive technology: dynamic mode. Unlike every other kit on the market, VOLspeed does not apply a fixed bypass to the speed sensor. Instead, the module progressively reduces motor assistance as speed increases beyond the legal limit — producing a smooth, natural deceleration curve rather than an abrupt wall.
The practical result is a ride quality that experienced cyclists consistently describe as superior on long climbs and fast descents, where the hard cut of other kits interrupts cadence and flow. VOLspeed is Plug & Play: the module connects inside the motor casing with no external components, and is activated through the bike's native display.
VOLspeed V2 — Bosch Smart System (BES3)
The V2 is designed specifically for the Bosch Smart System (BES3), introduced across Bosch-equipped bikes from 2022 onwards. The Smart System includes more sophisticated anti-tampering logic than earlier Bosch generations, and the V2 is engineered to operate within those constraints. As with all Smart System kits, firmware update discipline is essential: never accept automatic Bosch updates through the eBike Flow app without first confirming compatibility on the VOLspeed website.
VOLspeed V3 — Yamaha PW-X3 and PW-S2
The V3 covers Yamaha PW-X3 and PW-S2motors (2022 and later). Yamaha's PW-X3 is widely fitted to trail and enduro ebikes from Trek, Haibike and others; the PW-S2 appears on lighter trail-oriented platforms. Note that earlier Yamaha motors (PW-X2, PW-SE, original PW) use a different connector layout — verify your exact motor generation before ordering.
VOLspeed V4 — Bosch Gen4 and Performance CX
The V4 is the version for Bosch Gen4 and Performance CX motors. These motors appear across a wide range of mountain, cargo and trekking bikes. The V4 shares the dynamic mode of the other versions and ships with the updated metal casing that became standard across the range in September 2024.
Metal casing update — September 2024
From September 2024, VOLspeed replaced the plastic housing used in earlier production runs with a fully metal casing across all versions. The change improves heat dissipation during sustained high-load riding, and adds meaningful vibration and impact resistance. If you purchased a VOLspeed before September 2024 and ride trail or enduro terrain regularly, the updated version is a worthwhile upgrade.
Installation guide — 6 steps
- Gather tools: Torx T25 and T30 keys, clean work surface, the model-specific video tutorial from the VOLspeed website.
- Remove the motor cover: undo the Torx bolts (typically 4 to 8 depending on motor) and lift the cover carefully. Place parts on a clean cloth.
- Identify the target connector:locate the connector specified in your version's instructions — this is the pedal assist sensor cable or a dedicated connector depending on the motor.
- Connect the VOLspeed module: plug the module in series on the identified connector. Connectors are keyed and cannot be reversed.
- Route the module inside the casing: the metal housing is compact. Fold cables neatly to avoid pinching when the cover is replaced.
- Refit and test: reattach the motor cover, power on the bike, and use the activation sequence on your display to enter tuning mode. Dynamic mode engages immediately — assistance reduces progressively rather than cutting hard.
VOLspeed vs SpeedBox — which to choose?
Both are premium internal kits with real speed display and very low detection risk. The decision comes down to priorities:
- Choose VOLspeed if ride quality is your priority — dynamic mode produces a noticeably smoother feel, particularly on long rides and technical terrain. Also the better option for Yamaha PW-X3 and PW-S2 motors.
- Choose SpeedBox if you want Bluetooth control (B.Tuning), a lifetime warranty, or need compatibility with Shimano, Bafang, TQ, Brose, or older Yamaha motors not covered by VOLspeed.
